The cheapest commercial refrigeration is rarely the cheapest to own.
When you kit out a kitchen, a shop or a cold room, the sticker price is only the first number you pay. The one that really matters is what the equipment costs you over the years you run it — and who picks up the phone when it stops.
Every week we speak to business owners weighing up two quotes. One is noticeably cheaper. It is tempting, and we understand why — margins are tight and cash is king. But before you sign for the lowest number, it is worth asking a harder question: cheaper to buy, or cheaper to own? Those are not the same thing, and the gap between them has closed more than one good business.
Price is what you pay once. Cost is what you pay for years.
A display fridge, a bakery proofer, a butchery cold room or a takeaway prep counter is not a once-off purchase — it is a piece of equipment you depend on every trading day. So the real price tag includes the electricity it draws, the stock it protects, the repairs it needs, and how many years it lasts before you replace it.
A unit that costs less up front but runs an inefficient compressor can quietly add hundreds of rands a month to your electricity bill. A cold room that struggles to hold temperature on a hot Highveld afternoon does not just cost you a call-out — it costs you the meat, the dairy or the cake batter sitting inside it. We have seen a single failed fridge over a long weekend wipe out far more in spoiled stock than the customer ever “saved” on the cheaper model.
The question we ask every customer:
“What does it cost you if this stops working on your busiest Saturday — and how quickly can someone fix it?”
If the honest answer is “a lot” and “I don’t know,” the cheapest quote is usually the wrong one.
The hidden cost of commercial refrigeration: what the label doesn’t show
Two units can look almost identical on a showroom floor and behave completely differently in your business. The difference is rarely on the spec sheet — it is in the things you only find out about later:
- Will spares be available in two years? A machine you cannot get parts for is not a bargain — it is a countdown to a full replacement.
- Is it built for how you actually trade? A fridge sized for a spaza shop is not the same as one built to hold a butchery’s display through a load-shedding cycle. The wrong fit wastes money even when the price looks good.
- Who stands behind the sale? A warranty is only worth as much as the company honouring it. If the seller disappears the moment the invoice is paid, you are on your own.
- Can someone come out and fix it? Fast, local after-sales support is the difference between an hour of downtime and a weekend of lost trade.
What 35 years of trading actually buys you
This is where we ask you to look past the number on the quote. When you buy from Inacio Refrigeration, you are not buying a box — you are buying the support that comes with it. We have kept bakeries, butcheries, restaurants, takeaways, coffee shops and spaza shops running for more than three decades, and that only happens if the equipment holds up and someone answers when it doesn’t.
We would rather sell you the right unit for your trade than the cheapest one on the floor, because we are the people you will phone if it lets you down. That accountability is baked into our price — and it is exactly the part a bargain-basement seller leaves out. Buy cheap and buy twice, as the old traders say; buy right and you buy once.
None of this means you should overspend. It means you should compare the whole picture: running costs, reliability, the right fit for your business, available spares, and real after-sales support. Judge value on that, and more often than not the smartest buy is not the cheapest ticket — it is the one that keeps trading long after the “special” has broken down.
Commercial refrigeration buying FAQs
Is it worth paying more for commercial refrigeration?
Usually, yes, as long as you are paying for the right things: better energy efficiency, stronger components, a recognised brand and a supplier who supports you after the sale. Paying more for features your business will never use is not worth it. We will tell you the difference.
How long should a commercial fridge last?
A well-chosen, well-maintained unit should give you many years of service. Budget units that work too hard in hot shops and busy trading conditions tend to wear out much sooner. Regular cleaning of the condenser and checking the door seals makes a big difference to lifespan.
What should I compare besides the price?
Compare running costs, the warranty and who honours it, whether spare parts are available locally, how quickly the supplier can help if something goes wrong, and whether the unit is the right size for your trade.
Can I get spare parts for equipment bought from Inacio Refrigeration?
Yes. Every product bought from us has spare parts available, and if a part is not on our shelf, we will find it for you.
Not sure which unit is right for your business?
Talk to us before you buy. Tell us your trade, your space and how hard the equipment has to work, and we will point you to the unit that actually fits — no obligation, honest advice.
